What is Rhinoplasty Surgery?
Rhinoplasty is a surgical procedure to change the size, shape, or proportions of their nose. Patients who are older than 18 years old and have nose deformations from an injury, a birth defect or some breathing difficulties may prefer to have rhinoplasty surgery.
How is Rhinoplasty Surgery performed?
There are many different techniques that can be performed within the rhinoplasty procedure. It starts with a preparation process in which the expectations of patients are identified and the type of nose structure they desire and that fits them is determined. Surgeons and patients decide which type and shape are better for their health and beauty.
The rhinoplasty surgery is performed under general anaesthesia. The surgery, in general, lasts from 2.5 hours to 3.5 hours according to the procedures to be performed.
Surgeons can change the shape of the nasal bones or cartilage as planned and correct the deviation in the wall between the two sides of the nose. Correction of deviated or crooked bones improves the patient’s breathing. The surgery may also include breaking some parts of the bones.
How is the recovery period of Rhinoplasty Surgery?
After rhinoplasty, the patients are required to stay in the hospital for one night. They can leave the hospital after the medical examinations the next day. All necessary advice and medications are provided.
In a few cases, patients may experience swelling and bleeding but generally tampons and silicone sheets are removed within a week without any further intervention. During that period, patients should put ice to their nose several times in a day, sleep backwards, and keep medical tape on the nose. After removing tampons, the nose might seem swollen and bigger. This is a normal and temporary effect due to edema. In most cases, 80% of complaints disappear within the first month. Massaging the nose for three months after surgery will help recovery.
Patients’ nose bones completely heal and the nose gets its new shape after six weeks. Also patients may feel sensationally numb around the nose, but this does not last long and the patient regains the sense within 12 months, at most.
