What is Gastric Sleeve Surgery?
Gastric sleeve surgery is a procedure that makes the stomach smaller and therefore causes the patient to feel fuller quicker.
It does this by removing approximately 75-80% of the stomach, rather than creating a pouch as it would do in a gastric bypass surgery.
How is Gastric Sleeve performed?
In sleeve gastrectomy (gastric sleeve), approximately 75-80% of the stomach is removed via a stapler including the fundus part. With the development of laparoscopic techniques, sleeve gastrectomy (gastric sleeve) has shortened the operation time and also reduced the complication rate.
Laparoscopic sleeve gastrectomy (gastric sleeve) is performed within 5 trocars. After the stomach is separated from the fatty tissue during the operationi approximately 75-80% of stomach is separated by cutting and suturing tools, which we call staplers. The operation averagely takes 1-1.5 hours. It usually requires three days of hospitalization.
How is the recovery period of Gastric Sleeve?
Complications such as bleeding, leakage, embolism, wound infection and respiratory tract infection can be seen in the early period after sleeve gastrectomy operation, although it is rare. The possibility of developing these complications can be seen depending on the operation technique, duration and comorbidities of the patients. Long-term complications after sleeve gastrectomy (gastric sleeve) operation are; stomach ulcer, gallstone formation, bile reflux and incisional hernia, albeit it is rarely seen.
