Gastric Bypass Surgery
Gastric bypass surgery involves using surgical staples to create a small pouch at the top of the stomach, essentially forming a very small stomach.
This small pouch is then connected to the small intestine, bypassing the rest of the stomach.
This means that, in future, it will take less food to make the patient feel full and they will absorb fewer calories from the food they do eat.
Gastric Sleeve Surgery
A sleeve gastrectomy, or gastric sleeve surgery, is similar to gastric bypass surgery in the sense that it makes the stomach smaller and therefore causes the patient to feel full sooner when eating.
However, this type of surgery makes the stomach smaller, by removing approximately 75-80% of it, rather than creating a pouch.
The development of laparoscopic techniques has shortened the operation time and reduced the likelihood of complications significantly.
On average, gastric sleeve surgery now takes only around 1-1.5 hours and requires three days of hospitalisation.
Gastric Balloon Surgery
A silicone material is placed inside the stomach and inflated by the endoscopic method. The patient can leave hospital after 2 hours of observation. With the volume of the gastric balloon, it reduces the amount of food eaten by the patient and thus enables weight loss.
A gastric balloon is an inflatable silicone material that is temporarily placed in the stomach. It is one of the non-surgical methods used in the treatment of obesity. It is used for weight loss when diet and exercise do not work, surgery is not desired or recommended, or, in some cases, for preparation before other bariatric surgeries.
Gastric balloon procedure is also used as surgery preparation before providing weight loss operation to individuals; to the individuals with a body mass index(BMI) over 27 kg/m2, to the individuals who do not accept surgery, or to the individuals who are super obese.
Gastric balloons are basically classified into two groups; 6 months old and 12 months old. The type of balloon is determined according to the amount of weight desired to be lost.
Gastric balloon procedure is a non-surgical procedure performed endoscopically and is generally well tolerated and with good results.
Complaints such as stomach pain, cramps and nausea might occur for the first 3-5 days after the procedure, although they are rare, and these complaints are usually relieved with medication.
